Confusing Passage

A part I found confusing is were Pip says "This was so much her normal state that Joe and I would often for weeks together, be, as to our fingers, like monumental Crusaders as to theur legs." (pg 20, chapter 4). What does this mean? I realize what Pip is saying is supposed to exagerate how horrible Mrs. Joe acts to her husband and little brother but the Crusader reference is difficult to dechiper. Also, the detail about fingers doesn't make much sense to me either.
Sorry my Blog was late but please help me!
